The Grand Canyon is a natural fissure of rock
located in Arizona, U.S.A. It is composed of
many layers of red rock, revealing millions
of years worth of geological structure and history.

The area was inhabited by Native Americans
for at least 4,000 years beforehand.
In September 1540, however, a party of Spanish
soldiers, led by Captain García López de Cárdenas,
discovered the Canyon themselves. It would be
another 200 years until the next party would
find it again. Many mining companies in the
late 19th century were interested in the region
due to the promise of getting copper and
asbestos. Many of the early residents in the
area realized that a better solution instead
of mining would be tourism, thus making the
Grand Canyon a popular tourist destination
since the early 20th century.
